Solar 102: Setting Up Your Overland and Off-Road Power System

Portable solar panels are reshaping how backcountry explorers think about access to electricity. Solar has become far more affordable and widely available in less than a decade. As a result, these handy systems are increasingly being turned to for added electrical generation while stationary during off-road/overland trips. Understanding the basics of solar systems will help you know whether they make sense for expanding the capabilities of your rig and/or trailer. If you’re new to electrical systems, and especially thse in vehicles, don’t worry. The first article in this Gear Doctor series provides a better understanding of how an off-road power grid works. Start there, and then you can begin looking at which hardware to equip yourself with. Because solar components are often sold as individualized pieces, it’s common to not have all that’s essential as you dive into the purchase of “starter” components (e.g., a solar panel). For that reason, most companies offer “kits”, which bundle all the needed parts into a set with matching capacities. Taking the guesswork out of matching up components is, for most consumers, a godsend. Rather than costing a premium, such bundled kits typic...

Bath teams ‘muster’ their strength and take home first place in annual fireman’s muster

The first place winners of the Bath Heritage Days Fireman’s Muster, Bath’s Sen. Baxter and Quansigamog teams, celebrate their victory in front of the 1856 Sen. Baxter engine. (Hannah LaClaire / The Times Record) BATH — A cheer erupted from the 40 or 50 fireman’s muster team members gathered in downtown Bath Saturday afternoon as both Bath teams, Sen. Baxter and Quansigamog, were declared winners, defending their title as champions of the country’s oldest continued organized sport. The fireman’s muster is said to have started in Bath in 1849. One hundred and seventy years later, the annual firemen’s muster still happens in downtown Bath, using fire engines built in 1853 and 1856. Teams from all over New England come to hand-pump 1800s firefighting equipment, competing to see which team can shoot the longest stream of water in 15 minutes. A suction hose goes into the water tank, which is kept full from a hydrant or a tanker truck, according to the Bath Heritage Days website. The foreman stands on top and keeps an eye on wind conditions. The pipe crew handles the nozzle and aims the water down a line of red resin paper. The farthest dime-sized drop of water recorded on the paper w...

Apple’s New Macs Use ’100 Percent Recycled Aluminum,’ But What Does That Mean?

Apple’s second press blitz of the fall delivered details on a bunch of new devices. But the company also made some announcements on the environmental front that are generating buzz and raising questions, particularly regarding the recycled materials some of its 2018 product line will use. Specifically, Apple announced that the 2018 models of its MacBook Air and its back-from-the-dead Mac Mini are being built with a 100 percent recycled aluminum case, using a custom alloy that incorporates excess aluminum scavenged from the manufacturing process. Apple claims these changes, along with the incorporation of post-consumer recycled plastic into the Mac Mini, have reduced the two products’ overall carbon footprints by nearly 50 percent, and that the new MacBook Air is the “greenest Mac ever.” It’s the latest in Apple’s ongoing effort to fashion itself as a company environmentally-conscious consumers can feel good buying from. Last spring, Apple announced that all its data centers, stores, and offices are now powered by renewable energy, and it debuted a second-generation version of an iPhone recycling robot that will somehow factor into the company’s ambitious long-term goal, first a...

Anchorage school board looking at four-day, year-round class schedule – KTVA 11

Anchorage school board members will come together Tuesday evening for a regularly scheduled meeting. On the agenda is a proposal to collect data from other districts that have alternative school schedules, including year-round and four day school weeks.  “Part of that is not knowing what our budget is going to be next year. So, we’re just looking at every possibility and how we can provide good education to our students,” Marsett said.  The proposal includes examining outcomes with year-round schooling around the country. Some research suggests a positive impact on student retention.  “A lot of students come back after the summer, and you spend several months just catching them up again,” Marsett said.  Also in response to budget uncertainty, the Anchorage School Board is pulling together a steering committee to create a five-year strategic plan for education. The effort will replace the district’s current Destination 2020 initiative next year. According to Marsett, the steering committee will include business groups, non-profits, and faith-based organizations.  “What we’re asking for is a commitment from the community to help us ...

Simple, pure life in Costa Rica | Ledger Independent

In English, Costa Rica translates to rich coast. And Costa Rica’s unofficial motto is Pura Vida, or simple or pure life. We discovered evidence of both when my husband and I recently traveled to the Central American country with a small group of students, parents and our trip coordinator, Mason County High School Spanish teacher Sam Caudill. While the trip itinerary included several specific destinations and activities, we found a great deal of the country’s character revealed while we traveled from point to point through the small towns, as well as along the still very rugged roads. Small, open-air churches painted in red and green and gold surrounded by well-manicured grounds drew us in. Roadside cafes where we snacked on cheese tortillas and cakes made entirely from scratch allowed us to spend a few simple moments in conversation with the proprietors. Depending on our location, the weather and the scenery each provided their own richness. For as much of the refreshing rain as we experienced, we also savored just as much sunshine. And while some moments in the higher altitudes were cool, others on the sandy beaches were extremely balmy. We also had to wait for the fog to lift ...
