The classical computing paradigm has always been tied to speed, at least in the popular imagination.

The classical computing paradigm has always been tied to speed, at least in the popular imagination. Sure, in reality the goals for classical computing have always been more complex: the increasing ability to handle bigger, more numerous or just more nuanced data sets, manipulated in new ways to suss out valuable insights, and so forth. But speed is how we judge our smartphones, tablets and laptops: how fast are they? Therefore, which one is the “best”? So it’s little wonder this illusory yardstick has carried over into discussions of quantum computing. When you read the popular press about quantum computing, it’s all about speed, speed, speed. Everything is about speed. And that sort of thinking will prevent us from grasping just what quantum computing can do for us. First of all, classical computing’s preoccupation with speed is now viewed as antiquated and potentially harmful, as the search for speed blinded us to energy efficiency, arguably the focus of the most urgent current research and development work. Extrapolating this quantitative fixation to quantum computing is a distraction and doesn’t capture the qualitative difference between classical computing and quantum comp...

Bosch Track Saw with Plunge Action GKT13-225L Review

The Robert Bosch Tool Corporation in North America was formed in January 2003. Sixteen years later the first Bosch track saw hit North America. While the GKT 55 GCE track saw has been available in Europe for many years, they’re coming a little late to this party. Now, in a market with sharp competition and a slightly higher price tag, the GKT13-225L will need to prove its worth. Fortunately for Bosch, this saw delivers a truckload of smart and useful features aimed at Pros, plus the quality of German engineering that all make it worth the wait. Well, it was a long wait, but I think we benefited greatly from the GKT 55 GCE pedigree and its field service in Europe. The Bosch track saw is an excellent saw that produces repeatable, reliable, high-quality results across many applications. The only question left to ask is when will we see the cordless version? SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1389975325257-0′); }); For the uninitiated, let me walk you through the basic concept of a track saw. It has all the same functionality of a normal circular saw, but it combines two features that put it in a class all its own, (wit...

SUSE Linux bridges the gap between the server and the cloud

The new SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 1 is positioned as the operating system for servers, datacenters, and the cloud. By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols for Linux and Open Source | June 25, 2019 — 19:49 GMT (03:49 GMT+08:00) | Topic: Cloud Business IT is heading for the cloud. But, as the saying goes, “The cloud is just other people’s computers.” It’s more complicated than that. SUSE knows that, and with its recent release of its flagship operating system, SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Server (SLES) Service Pack 1, it’s created an operating system that bridges the distance between server and clouds. SUSE calls this Multimodal IT. What’s that, you ask? It means SLES 15 SP1 integrates cloud-based platforms with your enterprise systems; it merges containerized development with traditional development, and combining legacy applications with microservices. One operating system, many roles. “SUSE Linux Enterprise is a modern and modular OS that helps simplify multimodal IT, making traditional IT infrastructure efficient and providing an engaging platform for developers,” said Thomas Di Giacomo, SUSE president of engineering, product...

The DSS1 Performance Disc road bike is the first stock bike offering from renowned custom bike

The DSS1 Performance Disc road bike is the first stock bike offering from renowned custom bike builder Thomas Donhou, and represents a distillation of the design ideas expressed in his bicycle creations over the years. What Donhou has created in the DSS1 is a signature bike, a culmination of his bicycle design ideas. One common signature on many of his bikes over the years has been disc brakes. Donhou started adding disc brakes to steel frames many years ago at a time when doing so was still far from the commonplace sight it has become this year. The Reynolds 853 frame is specifically designed for disc brakes. The rear brake is mounted inside the rear dropout and all the cables routed externally along the down tube – the brake cable runs a full length of outer housing for protection from grime and grit. There are no mudguard mounts; the DSS1 is not meant as an all-weather commuter/winter training bike, it’s pegged as a high performance disc-equipped bike. And on that front it delivers. This is a bike with exemplary handling and top notch performance. The ride displays a superb smoothness from the Reynolds 853 Pro Team tubeset and a high class build kit that shines i...

Dog falls off Santa Barbara cliff, needs donations for emergency surgery

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A dog survived after falling off a Santa Barbara cliff and onto 1000 Steps Beach in Santa Barbara early Thursday morning. The Santa Barbara Police Department says surveillance footage from a neighbor’s home shows the dog walking along a chain link fence at the end of Santa Cruz Boulevard around 1 a.m. Thursday. The dog did not have an owner with him.  The dog then jumped through a hole in the fence to go after something on the other side, falling roughly 80 feet onto the beach below.  “It wasn’t until he started opening his eyes and trying to move around that people realized, ‘Oh, this animal needs our help,’” Detective April Beltran with the Santa Barbara Police Department said. The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital. He was bloodied and suffered a fractured leg and hip along with a shoulder laceration.  Police say the body appeared to be well-fed and in good condition, leading to the belief that the dog has an owner. However, that owner has not yet been identified. The dog had no collar or tracking chip. “That was actually really tough,” she said. “He was given pain medicine but you could tell h...

I’ve had this helmet for over 4 months and can only say it has been great.

I’ve had this helmet for over 4 months and can only say it has been great. The unique design always gets lots of comments and not only does it look smarts it’s also really practical. It’s super lightweight and comes with a handy bag to carry it around in, the lightweight nature of the helmet was one of the main reasons I was drawn to it. I travel quite a lot while riding especially at university where I have to travel all around London on the tubes to go to training and competitions. Another benefit is that the changeable liners. These ensure the helmet fits perfectly, this was a problem I found with some other manufacturers as not all head are the same size so I struggled to find a helmet which fitted. The liners can be removed for washing which keeps the helmet fresh and clean all year round. I really like the safety aspect of this helmet it has certification approval ASTM – PAS015 2011 – KITEMARK – 2015 VG1 01.040.2014 European Directive 89/686/EC which are all up to date with the current regulations for British Show jumping, British Dressage and The British Horse Society. The hat also provides ventilation while riding which comes in useful when riding in ho...

Why CBD Water Is Not Really A Thing And May Even Be Dangerous

Two identical drams of CBD from Avicanna’s laboratories demonstrate the lighter, pinkish one on the right was exposed to oxygen. CBD water is a perfect example of capitalism at its phoniest. While plenty of companies are looking to cash in by claiming their products contain beneficial CBD, CBD water is the easiest example of how a fool and his money are soon parted. CBD or cannabidiol, the low THC product that everyone touts as being “the non-psychoactive form of cannabis,” (which in and of itself is slightly misleading, but that is for a different column) destabilizes when exposed to light or oxygen. Legitimate CBD products are sold in dark, opaque bottles with labels that warn the consumer to store the bottle away from light, in a cool, dark place. Scientists are just beginning to understand how hemp-derived CBD is beneficial to the human body’s endocannabinoid system. Depending on the manufacturing process, the minuscule amount of CBD that CBD water contains is most likely rendered ineffective when it is exposed to light for an extended period of time, such as being stationary in a brightly-lit supermarket refrigerator or storage facility all day. CBD produc...
