Picky Nicky on the sustainability of hotel amenities

When I checked into my room at the Park Hyatt Tokyo for the first time, in 2006, I got to sample Aesop skin and haircare products and have been using them ever since. I took the products home and continued to use the 50ml containers for a number of years, refilling them over and over when travelling. The Four Seasons hotel group claims to have been the first to introduce complimentary in-room shampoo and other toiletries, inventing the hotel amenity as we know it today. The alternative – travelling with carry-on liquids – is challenging, but about the only thing I will use from a hotel’s amenities now is a bar of soap or a refillable dispenser. Everything else is packaged in plastic and often disposed of partially used and replaced daily by housekeeping. Once welcomed as a perk for clients, the provision of amenities is now a bit of a headache for the hospitality sector. Hotels want to offer products that fit with their brand positioning. Recycled plastic is considered lacking in premium feel and glass is a health and safety risk, so something like PET (polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic widely used for packaging) is the easy option. It can be recycled, yes, but where reliabl...

At first blush, careers in craftsmanship may seem antiquated, conjuring images of a blacksmith working a forge or a seamstress operating a loom. However archaic these crafts may seem, creative endeavors like these and others still are viable commodities.  The creative industry is projected to grow 4 percent by 2026 and add nearly 35,000 jobs, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Knowing this, it’s fair to wonder how technology has changed the way creatives, well, create. Do woodworkers still saw and sand by hand? How has digital imaging changed the way photographers deliver portraits? To find out, we set out to capture Eastside artisans on the job.  From the invention of the camera obscura more than 1,000 years ago, to daguerreotype studios of the mid- to late-1800s to shopping mall portrait studios like Glamour Shots, portraiture always has been considered an artful occupation. However, the technological advances that placed cameras in many pockets largely challenged the field. How can one artisan compete against every millennial with a smartphone camera in portrait mode? One Eastside couple has an answer.  After lengthy corporate careers in California, D...

ECU Football Burning Questions: Defensive Line Podcasts CBS Sports Digital Facebook Twitter Instagram Podcast Sportradar

Breaking down East Carolina’s 2019 football team, position by position, based on burning questions for each spot. We continue with the ECU defensive line. The Pirates were hopeful they would have Harvey for one more season, but the NCAA didn’t rule in their favor this time. That means ECU has to find a way to replace the type of presence that created an AAC-record 25.5 tackles for loss, including a league-best 14.5 sacks, in a breakout 2018 senior season. That’s a ton of production to replace. In reality, no one man can replace that amount of game-changing plays, and it will likely take more than two or three, given the state of ECU’s roster. ECU does return three other starters along the defensive line in senior end Kendall Futrell and senior defensive tackles Alex Turner and Jalen Price, but that trio combined for just 9.5 sacks last season. Each of those three will likely have to increase those numbers and the amount of quarterback hurries they created, from a season ago. They need help from juniors Chance Purvis and Chandon Hickerson, two players with game experience at defensive end. There are also a number of freshmen and sophomores along the defensive line who could...

Removing Rust from Nuts and Bolts Register ico-categories ico-open ico-close ico-supplier ico-white-paper-case-study ico-product ico-cad

Rusted equipment can be a serious detriment to any manufacturing shop or industrial product user, and removing rusted bolts and screws can prove to be a real pain. Unless it is specially treated with rust-resistant materials, nearly every iron-based component is at risk of rusting, particularly under specific environmental conditions that accelerate this type of deterioration. Although not every form of rust is visibly detectable, any significant accumulation will cause a component to malfunction and eventually fail over timeRust traditionally refers only to the formation of iron oxides in iron-based metals and alloys, although other types of metal face similar kinds of oxide corrosion. The combination of water and oxygen causes these iron oxides to form a stiff, non-reactive coating along the metal’s surface. As rusted parts of the metal component began to flake away, more surface area is exposed and the rusting continues until all the material’s oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide are expended, or the material is dissolved entirely. In the case of fasteners, such as bolts and screws, rust corrosion can lead to a larger component or entire machine failing, making it all the more ...

From fire risk to carbon monoxide poisoning: how to use your heater safely this winter | Australia news

Two experts offer some advice on the dangers associated with household heaters and how you can avoid them Winter has come and the house is freezing. Your first thought is surely to turn the heater on. But as Australian families tragically learn each year, there are risks to keeping yourself and your home warm. So what do you need to know? We spoke to two experts to answer those questions. The first question you should ask yourself, says Energy Safe Victoria’s Paul Fearon, is “have you had it serviced?” You should do that every two years at least, he says. The technician will clean out your heater and identify any faults or damage. Importantly, they will also check the environment that the heater is operating in. “Heaters that are older than 15 years old, you need to be particularly vigilant about because they don’t last forever,” he says. Chris Barnes, a heating expert at Choice, says it’s vital your gas heater is installed properly. “That’s whether it’s a portable unflued gas heater that just connects to a bayonet fitting in the floor or if it’s a flued heater, like a gas log fire place.” Either way, you should consider getting a carbon monoxide alarm if you have any sort of g...

SCREEN TEST▶ Generally speaking, wearing any sunscreen is better than none at all. But many products come with ingredients that are bad for you, says the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit health-research organization. Look for titanium dioxide or zinc oxide on your sunscreen’s list of active ingredients. If it lists anything other than those two things, don’t say we didn’t warn you. SPRAY AWAY▶ Good news for golfers: For years, physical blockers titanium dioxide and zinc oxide could be found only in lotion form. But several companies now offer these effective and highly recommended screens in sprays, making it more convenient for golfers to cover skin and reapply often. One caveat: Do not inhale while applying. These products might contain nanoparticles that are thought to cause lung cancer if breathed in large doses. Our picks: Honest Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 ($14); Bare Republic Mineral SPF 40 Sport Sunscreen Spray ($16). ROCK THAT NEON▶ All clothing offers some protection from ultraviolet rays. However, some do a better job than others. Vibrant colors offer a higher ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF, than dull ones, for example. And a new sh...
